V3.1 Build Manual Updates

Those who follow the V3.1 printed manual may have some notes, tips or corrections on the various steps. This is the place to share them all! New builders can use this section as an addendum or for clarification. There are also many tips on specific build steps in the forum, blog and here in the wiki. Please avoid describing mods that are not absolutely necessary to get a good working RapMan, but please do add links to your special mods.

There is a separate page for Notes on the V3.0 build manual where there may be additional help and advice.v3.0 Build Manual Updates

Before you begin

You will need to download the printed manual, the two 3D manuals and the build manual video. To view them you will need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat. They come zipped and if you have problems decompressing them try a different decompression application. Even though I have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat my Windows machine still reports that I should be running a newer version. My Apple machine run fine (of course.)

Pre-assembly checks

  • Check that the threaded 8mm holes in the Base Bed (Part 10020) are exactly vertical as these have to line up with holes that are in another plate which is 2 or 3cm away.
  • Check that you have all the tools required for assembly

  • step 9-11: in the pictures 11-01-04 and 11-01-05 2 screws are at the wrong position. The ones which are in the back in the pictures have to go through the inner holes of the #10029 parts, leaving the outer holes empty.

  • step 6: use the 95mm steel rod, secure it with 2 grub screws and 2 nuts
  • step 7: use the 60mm steel rod (when inserted it is not as high as the rod next to it), secure it with 2 grub screws and 2 nuts

18.01 Fitting the Conduit page 53

The wires supplied on the microswitches were not long enough to reach through the black conduit. The white wires on the X-axis were 84cm. Make your life easier and replace these wires with ones that are at least Xcm long - it's a lot easier to chop a bit off later than to add it on!

The microswitch wires are not strain-relieved - you could try to use a little heat-shrink tubing and a nylon tie to help ease the strain on the soldered joints

19.01 Mounting the Electronics page 55

Missing from this section are the instructions to set the stepper motor potentiometers (aka. pots, trimmers or variable resistors) on the PCB. Doing this will ensure that the steppers run at the correct voltage. These instructions are taken from the V3.0 manual. (build 1-13 bottom of page 35)

(note, you need a tiny screwdriver and a voltage meter)

Set the Stepper motor currents; adjust the trimmer pots on the PCB while taking a voltage reading on the corresponding test point  TPE = 1.1V, TPZ = 1.3V, TPX & TPY = 1.0V

These settings have been set by BfB before shipping but a few builders have found that they need to reset them.
